*Coon Dog enthusiasts begin to fill Main Street*

Saluda’s Beloved Tradition

If there’s one day each summer when you can truly see Saluda’s personality on full display, it’s Coon Dog Day.

On Saturday, July 11, 2026, downtown Saluda once again filled with coonhounds, homemade floats, music, vendors, families, longtime locals, and visitors for one of our most beloved (and certainly most unique) mountain traditions.

And what a day it was.

Despite a little mountain weather making an appearance, the 2026 Coon Dog Day celebration carried on with all the character, community spirit, and fun that have kept this Saluda tradition going for generations.

Starting the Day on Main Street

Coon Dog Day started bright and early with the annual Coon Dog Day 5K, beginning and ending on Main Street.

Runners took on the traditional route through Saluda while younger participants joined the fun with the Coon Puppies’ Fun Run. The 5K also supported the Polk County High School Cadets Marching Band, making those early-morning miles part of something bigger than race-day bragging rights.

By the time the runners crossed the finish line, downtown was already coming alive for the day ahead.

Then Came the Parade

Of course, it wouldn't be Coon Dog Day without the parade.

Spectators lined Main Street as coon dogs, homemade floats, fire trucks, local organizations, antique vehicles, and plenty of familiar Saluda faces made their way through downtown.

It’s a parade that doesn’t take itself too seriously, and that’s exactly why people love it.

Coon Dog Day has never been about perfectly polished floats or elaborate productions. It's about neighbors, families, businesses, community groups, dogs, and traditions coming together for a parade that could really only happen in a place like Saluda.

Dogs Take Center Stage

The four-legged guests of honor had plenty of opportunities to shine throughout the afternoon.

The Every Dog’s a Star Show welcomed dogs of all kinds for lighthearted competitions, while the traditional coonhound show celebrated the breed at the very heart of the festival.

From serious hounds to beloved family pets, there was certainly no shortage of wagging tails around town.

A Full Day in Downtown Saluda

Beyond the dogs, Main Street and McCreery Park stayed busy throughout the day.

Vendors filled downtown with arts, crafts, goods, and festival finds while food, live entertainment, and activities kept the celebration going. The annual firefighter agility competition brought a little friendly competition to the afternoon, and Saluda's local shops and restaurants welcomed the extra energy throughout town.

One of the best parts of Coon Dog Day is simply wandering.

You might come to see the parade and find yourself browsing a local shop, listening to music in the park, grabbing something to eat, admiring a coonhound, or simply catching up with someone you haven't seen in a while.

Dancing Into the Evening

As afternoon turned to evening, the celebration wasn't finished yet.

Music continued in McCreery Park before another longtime Coon Dog Day tradition brought the community together: square dancing under the stars.

After a full day of running, parading, shopping, eating, competing, barking, and celebrating, dancing in the heart of downtown was a fitting way to close out another Coon Dog Day in Saluda.

More Than a Festival

Coon Dog Day has been part of Saluda summers since the 1960s, and its longevity says something about this community.

Traditions like this don't continue for generations without people willing to show up for them.

Behind the scenes are volunteers, organizers, local businesses, community organizations, sponsors, vendors, performers, public safety personnel, participants, and countless others who give their time to make the day possible.

And then there are the people who come.

Some have attended Coon Dog Day for decades. Some plan their summer around it. Others stumble upon it during their first visit to Saluda and quickly realize they've found something wonderfully different.

In 2026, they all came together once again.
